In light of mother's day this past Sunday I thought it would be best to take a look at the wonderful mothers in nature who care and nurture their young in incredible ways. There is no love like the love received from our mothers, and this is not any different from mothers found all around the Earth in many different species. Take the Strawberry Poison Dart Frog for example; this obscure species is unexpectedly an exceptional mother! In fact, she produces about five offspring each time she reproduces. After the young matures to become tadpoles, she endures the burden of taking each one individually out of the water and onto separate bromeliad plants that hold water where she will disperse of her young until they go through metamorphosis to become frogs. Once they are all in place, she produces unfertilized eggs which she deposits to each of her young to eat! These frogs are not the only amazing mothers found in nature though; Washoe the Chimpanzee exhibited some of the most touching behaviour from a mother that we humans can certainly relate to. After losing two babies herself, her trainer Kat whom she grew attached to, left for a while after experiencing a miscarriage. When Kat returned, Washoe was angry that she had left so Kat explained to her through sign language that she had lost her baby. Washoe related to the pain of losing a child and signed back, "cry" and "please person hug". This was truly a touching moment for both Kat and Washoe. Some animals even go above and beyond what human mothers endure raising their children. Elephant mothers are pregnant for a year and 10 months! After this, the baby forms a tight bond with their mother and the entire herd helps ensure the baby is thoroughly protected. The herd has been observed celebrating with delightful cries when new babies are born! The mother will lift her babies over obstacles it runs into and the herd will delay migrating at a fast pace to ensure the baby can keep up. If the baby cries for help the entire herd will come rushing to its aid. These are only some amazing examples of brilliant mothers in nature. We love you moms!!
